Diabetic & High Risk Limb Care

Protecting Your Foot Health Through Early Detection and Ongoing Care

Living with diabetes or another condition that affects your circulation, nerve supply or immune system doesn't automatically mean you'll experience foot problems. However, it does mean that regular monitoring becomes an important part of protecting your long-term foot health.

At Blackfords Footcare, we take a proactive approach to care. Rather than simply treating problems as they arise, we aim to identify subtle changes at the earliest opportunity through enhanced screening, comprehensive assessment and ongoing monitoring where appropriate.

Our goal is to help you maintain healthy feet, reduce your risk of future complications and provide you with the knowledge and confidence to look after your feet between appointments.

This Treatment May Be Suitable If You...

  • Have Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes.

  • Have been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy.

  • Have reduced circulation or peripheral arterial disease.

  • Have rheumatoid arthritis or other inflammatory conditions affecting your feet.

  • Have lymphoedema affecting your lower limbs.

  • Have previously experienced a foot ulcer or delayed wound healing.

  • Have concerns about changes to the sensation, colour or temperature of your feet.

  • Would benefit from regular monitoring and preventative foot care.

What Happens During Your Appointment?

Every appointment is tailored to your individual needs and level of risk.

Depending on your medical history and clinical findings, your appointment may include:

  • A review of your general health, medications and any recent changes.

  • Assessment of your circulation using palpation and Doppler ultrasound where appropriate.

  • Neurological assessment to evaluate protective sensation.

  • Examination of your skin, nails and overall foot health.

  • Assessment of footwear where appropriate.

  • Routine podiatry treatment if required.

  • Individual risk assessment and personalised advice.

  • Discussion of any findings and recommendations for future monitoring or treatment.

Where clinically appropriate, additional assessments such as ABPI, thermodetection, blood pressure, oxygen saturation or ECG screening may also be recommended as part of your ongoing care.

Benefits of Enhanced Screening

Regular assessment can help:

  • Detect changes before they become serious.

  • Identify early signs of reduced circulation or nerve damage.

  • Reduce the risk of foot ulceration.

  • Support early intervention when changes are identified.

  • Provide reassurance that your feet remain healthy.

  • Help you understand how to care for your feet at home.

  • Build an ongoing picture of your foot health over time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does having diabetes mean I need different treatment?

Not necessarily. Many patients receive the same routine podiatry treatment. The difference is that we may recommend enhanced screening and more regular monitoring to help identify any changes at an early stage.

Will every appointment include all of the enhanced assessments?

No. Every patient is different. Any additional assessments are based on your individual clinical needs, medical history and current level of risk.

How often should my feet be checked?

This depends on your individual level of risk. We'll discuss an appropriate review schedule following your assessment and explain why we've made our recommendation.

Can I still have routine foot care?

Absolutely. Routine podiatry treatment remains an important part of maintaining healthy feet and may be provided alongside enhanced assessment where appropriate.

What if I notice a new problem between appointments?

If you develop a wound, notice a significant change in colour, swelling, temperature, or experience a sudden increase in pain, we recommend contacting us promptly so we can advise you on the most appropriate course of action.
